Homeowners Beware: Thieves Are Looking For Copper
That’s correct, copper. Thieves will strip the copper wiring out of light poles, andair conditioning units. Without these copper wires, the unit or light will not work. Once in possession of the copper wiring, the thieves will take it to recycle yards and sell it for a pretty penny.
So what can you do to prevent this? Well there are a lot of steps you can take to deter would be thieves. You can invest in a locking cage to go around your unit, especially if the unit sits on the side of your house. You can install motion activated lights around your unit, or you can place bushes or shrubbery around your unit.
A locking cage is a very effective way to deter thieves. The more work you make them do to get to the unit, the less likely they will be to try and get to your unit. If you invest in a locking cage, be sure you remember where the key or combination is, as a service technician will need to get to the unit in the event of maintenance work.
Motion lights can be another strong deterrent. Most thieves prefer to work in the dark, so it is harder to be seen. If you position motion sensor lights so that there is no way to get to your unit without turning them on, the would-be thief will be lit up like Christmas time. This will make him very easy to see from the road.
Bushes and shrubbery can hide your unit from plain sight. If the thief can’t easily see it, he or she will be less likely to take the time to look for it. Before you go with this option, however, there are many things you need to take into account. There are certain safety hazards involved with placing any kind of vegetation around your unit, as well as Home Owners Association codes and guidelines to follow. Consult your HOA and alicensed HVAC professional before following through with this option to be sure that your unit is as safe as possible.
