Keep Your Pets Safe This Summer
They greet you at the door after a long, hard day’s work. They can always bring a smile to your face and they are part of the family. So don’t you want to keep your pets safe and cool this summer?
There are many things you can do to keep your pets healthy in the hot summer months. We’ll talk about a few of them here.
Keep them inside
It’s hot out there, no doubt about it. The less time your furry friend spends outdoors in the sun, the better. Animals can get dehydrated quickly. If you have a pet that is usually an outdoor pet, maybe think about making them an indoor pet for the summer, especially animals with longer hair on their body.
Walk them early or late
If you routinely take your pet on a walk, make sure you take them as early in the morning or as late in the evening as you can. In the afternoon, the sun heats up the ground, and can burn the pads on their paws. This is extremely painful to the animal. If you cannot avoid walking them in the afternoon, look at getting some little booties for your pet. No, they may not look the best, but it’s better than having burnt paws.
Keep your pets hydrated as much as you can. Place a bowl of water in a cool, shady place that they can drink from as they need to throughout the day. Do your best to remain diligent about whether or not the water is empty or low and fill it as needed. Drinking enough water and staying hydrated are two big steps to keeping your pet healthy and happy.
Avoid shaving at all costs. When you shave your pet, you take away their fur coat that protects them from the sun’s harmful rays. The coat also serves to absorb a lot of the sun’s heat, keeping the animal relatively cool. With no fur coat, the sun beats down directly onto the animal and heats the body instead of just the fur coat.
