Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner?
It’s a difficult decision to make: should I pay for a costly and time consuming repair, or invest even more money in a completely new air conditioning unit? How can you be sure that you’re making the right choice? At Climate Control Experts, our job is to assist you in making the best decision for you. Our honest technicians can help guide you to the right decision, while giving expert advice. But even before you call a service professional, there are some things you can look out for regarding the health of your AC unit.
First, consider the age of your air conditioning unit. Once a unit hits about 10-15 years old, it’s age can start to show. As we all know, as things get older, they tend to get tired. If it seems to be breaking down more in its old age, or your bills are a bit higher than you’d like, it may mean it’s time to replace your unit.
Another thing to think about is how often your unit needs repairs, and how much those repairs cost. If your unit is breaking down more than two to three times a season, or the repairs it needs are costlier than you’d like, it might be time for a new one. While the cost of a new unit may be more than a repair, a strong and efficient unit will save you money in the long run.
If the original SEER was low, it may be an indication that your unit needs replacing. SEER stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio” and, of course, measures the efficiency of your unit. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient your unit is. Older units tend to have lower SEER rating, and anything under 13 or 14 SEER is definitely not going to be as efficient as you’d like. Today, SEER ratings go all the way up to 25, and the minimum is 13 or 14, depending on where you live. More efficient means a smaller energy bill, which means more money in your pocket!
