Is Your Attic Properly Insulated?

Without it, you’ll be letting hot air in a cold house, or cold air in a warm house, contributing to wasted energy and money. Attic insulation is a critical component of this equation that most people don’t think twice about.

When conditioned or heated air leaves through the attic, your heating, and cooling systems have to run longer to heat or cool your home. With higher quality and the right amount of insulation, less air will escape your home, saving you energy and money by decreasing your energy bill.

While savings can vary, the average homeowner can save up to 20% on energy bills with proper attic insulation. These savings can fluctuate based on resident habits, whether or not you have a smart thermostat, and the type of heating and cooling system you have. But no matter what kind of system you have or what your habits are, proper insulation does save money and wear and tear on your unit.

Now that you understand the importance or a properly insulated attic, how do you decide what type of insulation is best for your home? Insulation is rated by something called R-value, which is a term for thermal resistance. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation.

Roll-on insulation is generally the least expensive option because it is so easy and quick for contractors to install. The flexible material makes it easy to fit between studs and rafters, and that kind of tight fit helps to keep air trapped in the home.

Blow-in insulation is generally thought of as the next step up from roll-on. The loose-fill nature of blow-in insulation allows smaller crevices to be filled, causing less air to leak out. It is also moisture resistant, which helps prevent mold and other odors from occurring.

Spray foam insulation is considered the most energy-efficient insulation. Spray foam expands after it’s sprayed to tightly seal all the nooks and crannies that air could possibly leak from. It not only created an air-tight seal but is also longer lasting than other types of insulation.

If you’re worried about the effectiveness of your attic insulation, or you just want to step up your energy efficiency, look into your insulation options. Your wallet, your heating and cooling units, and your home will thank you.
